Tilicho Lake has long been shrouded in an almost mythical aura, often lauded as the world’s highest lake. For decades, it remained largely inaccessible, save for a handful of dedicated climbers and expeditions. The geopolitical landscape further restricted access when, following Nixon’s shift in China policy in 1974, the region above Thini on the Jomsom side became a strictly off-limits military zone. The Manang approach, too, was rarely, if ever, traversed.
A widely circulated guidebook even dismissed the trail to Tilicho as “a figment of someone’s fantasy,” and even the locals in Manang seemed unfamiliar with the route. This perceived unfriendliness from the Manangis stemmed from their historical reluctance to serve as porters for expeditions, a stark contrast to many other trekking communities. However, Manang is far from an ordinary village. Its inhabitants are deeply entrenched in international trade, a unique privilege granted to them through historical passport agreements. This distinct cultural and economic background set them apart, contributing to the mystique and inaccessibility that once defined the journey to Tilicho Lake.
