For a uniquely demanding adventure in the Khumbu region, consider a trek that blends the iconic journey to Everest Base Camp with an exploration of the area’s remote wilderness. This isn’t your typical route; it’s a challenging, high-altitude circuit that traverses three major passes, offering an unparalleled perspective of the Himalayas. The reward for your effort? Breathtaking panoramas of four of the world’s ten tallest mountains.
Your journey begins, like many others, in Lukla, with the trail diverging from the main path after Namche Bazaar. Instead of continuing towards Tengboche, you’ll venture up the Bhote Koshi canyon for several days. This less-traveled route leads you to the first formidable hurdle: the Renjo La pass at 5,360 meters (17,585 feet). From this vantage point, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of four giants: Cho Oyu (8,201 m), Makalu (8,463 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), and Mount Everest (8,850 m).
After conquering Renjo La, the trail descends into the scenic Gokyo Valley. Here, you can rest and admire the striking sight of Mount Pharilapche (6,017 m) rising majestically above the turquoise waters of Dudh Pokhari. From Gokyo, the route takes you along the immense Ngozumpa Glacier, which stretches for 36 kilometers, making it one of the largest in the entire Himalayan range.
The next challenge awaits as you cross the Cho-La pass at 5,400 meters (17,716 feet), offering spectacular views of Ama Dablam. From here, you’ll make your way to Gorekshep and finally, the legendary Everest Base Camp.
The circuit then veers away from the standard descent route. You’ll cross the final high pass, the Khongma-La (5,535 m), which provides a truly stunning alpine vista. From its summit, you’ll see Cholatse, Pokalde, Nuptse, Lhotse, Makalu, and Ama Dablam spread out before you. The pass descends into the valley of the Niyang Khola, leading you to the village of Chukkung, the gateway for climbs to Island Peak. The final leg of the trek rejoins the traditional path, taking you back to Lukla via the serene monastery town of Tengboche and back through Namche.
